What dimensions do I need when planning my stairs?

In order to be able to choose a suitable staircase, the following dimensions are particularly relevant:

  • Basic dimensions (A): The space available for your staircase is decisive for which models are suitable in the first place. The best way to do this is to measure the length and width of the space available for the stairs at the bottom of the room. Here it can help to take a floor plan of the room from a bird’s eye view.
  • Dimensions of the ceiling opening (B): The diameter of spiral staircases, the width of space-saving stairs and the dimensions of the hatch box for loft stairs must be chosen to match the ceiling opening. Therefore, be sure to measure the length and width of your ceiling opening before buying your staircase. In the case of system stairs, it should be noted that the ceiling opening must be 10 cm larger than the dimensions of the stairs. For example, a spiral staircase with a diameter of 140 cm requires a ceiling opening with a length and width of 150 cm.
  • Room height: The room height is also an important key figure for the planning of a staircase. A distinction must be made between two dimensions:
    • Floor height (C): The floor height is measured from the top of the floor to the top of the ceiling or gallery. It is crucial for the choice of system stairs.
    • Clear room height (D): In the case of loft stairs, on the other hand, the clear room height is considered an essential indicator. This is measured from the top edge of the floor to the bottom edge of the ceiling.
  • Ceiling thickness (E): The ceiling thickness is also particularly relevant for the installation of attic stairs. To find out, all you have to do is measure from the bottom edge of the ceiling to the top edge of the ceiling.
  • Fold-out space (F): In the case of attic stairs, it should be noted that they usually require a certain amount of space to fold out. This area, which goes beyond the basic dimensions, is called a fold-out space.

What is the best way to plan my staircase?

The planning of a staircase usually takes place in several steps. First of all, you need to be aware of the framework conditions – so you need to know where you want your staircase to be and what you want to use it for. For example, it makes a difference whether your staircase should be inside or outside. How often you have to go up and down the stairs is also decisive for the choice of staircase type.

Based on this, you can either decide on a type of staircase right away or measure the available space first. These two steps go hand in hand, after all, the staircase must meet your wishes, but at the same time also fit into the available space. You can read about the dimensions necessary for planning a staircase here , for example.

Once you have taken the measurements and determined the type of stairs, you can start looking for a suitable model. Minka offers a wide range of spiral staircases, space-saving stairs, outdoor stairs and attic stairs – feel free to search for our models online or ask for Minka products at a hardware store near you.

What types of stairs are there?

Minka offers different types of stairs. Basically, a distinction must be made between system and attic stairs. System stairs include our spiral staircases, space-saving staircases and outdoor stairs. The main differences in the material and construction of the loft stairs are the main ones. Here is an overview of the most important features of the different types of stairs:

  • Spiral staircases: Minka’s product range includes numerous spiral staircases made of wood and metal. Spiral staircases have a so-called spindle in the middle, on which the steps are mounted. The railing is mounted on the outside of the steps. Thus, spiral staircases are a space-saving special form of spiral staircase, which in comparison are open in the middle and usually have a railing on both sides.
  • Space-saving stairs: Space-saving stairs are usually used where there is little space available for climbing to the next floor. Depending on the model, they can be mounted straight, slightly rotated or quarter-turned. A special form of space-saving staircase is the so-called central spar staircase. They are characterized by the fact that the steps are held by a beam along the centerline. This makes them particularly flexible to install.
  • Outdoor stairs: Only stairs that are explicitly marked as outdoor stairs are suitable for outdoor use. In these models, the steps and railing are galvanized, which makes the materials extremely resistant to environmental influences. Minka has both straight stairs and spiral staircases for outdoor use in its range.
  • Attic stairs: Attic stairs (also called loft stairs, storage stairs or slide-in stairs) are stairs that are not used all the time and can therefore be folded back in after use. They are particularly suitable for climbing unoccupied rooms, such as the attic. Minka offers different types of attic stairs: On the one hand, a distinction must be made between wooden and metal stairs. A special form of metal stairs are scissor stairs. They open via so-called scissors and are easy to pull apart.
  • Flat roof stairs: To climb houses with flat roofs, stairs with a special flat roof hatch are needed. The top cover of these is made of galvanized metal, so that the exit is protected from wind and weather.

What is a U-value and how high should it be?

The U-value is also known as the heat transfer coefficient and the thermal insulation value. It indicates how much energy or heat passes through a material when there are different temperatures on both sides. The U-value is given with the unit W/m2K (watts per square meter times Kelvin).

The lower it is, the better the insulation performance of a material. Thanks to its many years of experience in the field of loft stairs, Minka is an expert in high-quality insulation technology. The U-values of our attic stairs are between 0.2 and 1.3 W/m2K. With the matching ISO upper cover, the values can be reduced even further.
